우리말에 금이야 옥이야, 금지옥엽, 애지중지 같은 표현이 있다.
영어에 비슷한 뜻으로 apple of my eye 가 있다.

이것은 구약성경의 신명기 32장 10절에서 유래한 것입니다.
In a dessert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple his eye.
여호와께서 그를 황무지에서 짐승이 부르짖는 광야에서 만나시고 호위하시며 보호하시며 자기의 눈동자같이 지키셨도다.

apple은 고어에서 눈동자 pupil 를 뜻하여 apple of my eye는 눈동자처럼 매우 사랑스럽고 소중한 사람 또는 그 무엇보다 아끼는 것을 나타낸다.
