WHAT DOES face the music mean?

The Cambridge Dictionary describes the idiom as meaning “to accept responsibility for something you have done.” Commonly used in situations in which one has to face the consequences for their actions, it's a short and simple phrase that can be used both teasingly and seriously, reducing the need to be wordy.

What's the origin of Face the Music?

Face the music is an American idiom, it seems to have originated in the New England area in the 1830s. The inspiration for this phrase is unknown. One thought is that face the music was originally an exhortation to face one's stage fright. Another possible origin is the United States' military.

세계 1차대전 후 경제 대공황 Great Depression 을 겪으며 정신적으로 큰 고통을 받은 미국인들 사이에서 오락성이 강한 대중문화에 대한 갈망이 커져 갔습니다.

유럽의 오페라 형식을 띤 미국적 정서의 대중 음악극이 크게 유행하게 되었는데 이것이 20세기 현대 예술의 총화라 불리는 뮤지컬입니다.

코미디 요소가 있는 것을 musical comedy, 드라마 위주의 것을 musical play라고 합니다.

 

공연 전 배우들은 긴장하여 무대에 올라가야 하기 때문에 음악이 시작되면 마음을 다잡아야 하지요.

face the music라고 하면 불편한 상황이나 시련을 각오할 때 사용하는 표현입니다.

face는 직면하다는 뜻의 동사.

 

*영국의 빅토리아 시대와 미국의 독립전쟁 때는 군대 규율이 엄해서 탈영, 살인, 성폭력 등을 저질러 군대의 명예를 더럽힌 병사들을 북을 쳐서 drum out 내쫓았다고 합니다.

The disgraced soldier was drummed out of his troop.

불명예스러운 그 병사는 부대에서 쫓겨났다.
